Establishment of the Institute for Forensic Sciences and Medicine (IFS)

The Ministry of National Security has forwarded a Cabinet Submission requesting that the Forensic Laboratory and the Legal Medical Unit be merged and renamed the Institute for Forensic Science and Medicine and that the merged entity undergo a full strategic/prior options review to determine the most suitable governance arrangement for the reorganized entity. The objective is to ensure that the resulting structure operates as economically and efficiently as possible within a more independent framework which clearly establishes an “arms-length” environment from real or perceived influence over execution of its work. As with all government entities that we recommended for merger it is believed the operational synergies and resource sharing will result in better utilization of limited resources and once a forward looking organization structure has been put in place the services provided will improve and general operating saving can be realized.
